A police officer is presently receiving treatment at a Kisii hospital after he was attacked by rowdy members of the public for attempting to rescue a murder suspect from an angry mob baying for his blood.
Constable David Nyamongo on Saturday evening sustained injuries after he, alongside six other colleagues from Gesonso Police Station, responded to a distress call notifying them that a man suspected of murder – Vincent Onditi Gwonda – was being stonned by angry locals at Mokwerero area.
On arrival at the scene, according to a police report seen by Citizen Digital, the officers were stunned as the locals – who were armed with pangas, stones, and other crude weapons – turned rowdy against them and started attacking them.
The officers were hence forced to expend 10 rounds of 7.62sp, 5 rounds of 7.62mm ball and 5 rounds of 7.62 blanks in order to rescue the suspect as well as the officer.
Constable Nyamongo and the suspect were rushed to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where the latter was treated and discharged, while the former is still admitted but in stable condition.
