The Inspector General of the National Police Mr Japhet Koome has condemned the attack on police officers during the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition countrywide protests on March 27, 2023.
The IG also assured Kenyans through a statement that the country is safe and adding the police are focused on discharging their duties including maintenance of law and order.
He said that during the protests, two vehicles were burnt down, and 23 police officers were injured.
“We recommend our officers for discharging their duties with the utmost respect for the rule of law as demonstrated by their restrain during the unlawful protest,” IG Koome said.
Regarding the invasion of the land owned by the former Head of State Mr Uhuru Kenyatta in Ruiru, the IG said that the police have started investigations into the matter.
The probe will also cover the invasion of East Africa Spectre Limited which is owned by the family of the former Prime Minister Mr Raila Odinga, which is located along Mombasa Road.
“Our investigation into the destructions and injuries caused has begun, and those found culpable shall face the law.”
The IG has further asked Kenyans to adhere to the rule of law when exercising their constitutional rights to picket, petition or demonstrate.
Hundreds of armed people invaded the Kenyatta family-owned Northlands City during the protests.
The property is located is on the Eastern Bypass. The goons looted and destroyed properties.
Some were seen along the road selling sheep stolen from the farm at a throw-away price and subdividing the land among themselves.
Kenyans protested the invasion and delay in police deployment to the farm that is supposed to be under protection.
The police only arrived at the scene on Tuesday morning, about 24 hours after the raid.
Mr Odinga’s firm was attacked by unknown individuals who destroyed windows before running away.
This comes as Azimio announce weekly demonstration that will take place on Monday, and Thursday, aimed at pushing the government to lower the cost of living.
