Popular hotel razed in Voi Central Business District fire : The Standard

Property worth millions of shillings was on Sunday afternoon destroyed after several business premises in Voi Central Business District in Taita-Taveta County caught fire.

Police confirmed that a popular hotel (Swahili Dishes) was among several business premises razed down by inferno whose cause still unknown.
Police said the fire outbreak was compounded by lack of firefighting equipment. Sources however linked the fire incident to electric fault.
The fire comes at a time when the county government is still grappling with the rising cases of fire outbreaks in major towns in the region. The problem had been compounded by lack of firefighting equipment.

“A lot of property could have been salvaged if firefighting equipment were available. The hotel and several other business premises was reduced to ashes,” said the County Police Commander Halima Abdi.
Briefing The Standard on the incident, the police commander said cause of the fire was still unknown. Ms Abdi said investigations into the fire incident have started and they are engaging the Kenya Power and Lighting Company to assist with investigations,” she said.
The police officer said the affected property owners are still assessing the damage and counting loses amounting to millions of shillings.
The strategic town and commercial hub of the county, situated along the busy Naiorbi-Mombasa highway has of late been hit by a series of fire outbreaks.
 In one of the recent incidences, a total of 10 shops were burnt in fire which caused panic among the business community.
