President Ruto appoints William Kimanthi National Legal Aid Service Board Chairperson » Capital News

Nairobi, Kenya, Mar 17 – President William Ruto has appointed William Kimanthi as the Chairperson of National Legal Aid Service Board.

Kimanthi who was appointed via Gazette Notice No. 3421 will serve in the position for a period of six years.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 9 (1) (a) of the Legal Aid Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint— MUSYOKI WILLIAM J. KIMANTHI to be the Chairperson of the National Legal Aid Service Board, for a period of six (6) years, with effect from the 17th March, 2023,” President Ruto said.

The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS), is a body corporate established under the Legal Aid Act 2016, Laws of Kenya.

It is mandated to among other things facilitate the provision of legal aid services in a coordinated manner to the indigent, vulnerable and marginalized citizenry, by ensuring that the services are accessible, affordable, accountable, transparent and efficient.

NLAS is governed by a board comprising of 11 members who are representatives of State and Non-Sate actors.

 It also has a Secretariat comprising of a Director, Technical and support staff who are mandated to provide administrative work.

The service provides legal aid (to eligible clients) in criminal matters, civil matters and matters of public interest. Its services are also extended to stateless persons and internally displaced persons.
