President William Ruto has unveiled a three phase agenda aimed to tackle the high cost of living in the country.
As he addressed the nation during the 59th Jamhuri Day celebrations, Ruto noted that the high cost of living has been a burden to most Kenyans.
“Our first agenda is to ensure that we encourage our farmers to access affordable fertiliser and that is why we reduced fertiliser from Sh7,000 to Sh3,500 so that we can enable our farmers to enhance their productivity in our journey to make food affordable in our republic,” he said.
The second phase as the President stated would be to import 10 million bags of “different assorted types of food” including maize to close the gap of having a minimal harvest “in this year’s agricultural season occasioned by climate change and agricultural season occasioned by failure of rain.
He said that the country was in process with the private sector to ensure that they import 300,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for the planting season in early 2023.
“Already 2 million bags have arrived in the country and 4 million bags are on the way,” he noted.
“I want to assure our farmers that we are going to stand with them to make sure that government provides adequate seed and subsidised fertiliser to make sure that our productivity is enhanced so that we can produce enough food and reduce the challenges of the high cost of living in our republic,” he added.
On the issue of unemployment, the President noted that a housing plan rolled out in earnest, and already the launching of the construction of 40,000 units of houses in the last three months.
