Relief To College Students As Government Set To Roll Out ‘Free’ Education –

2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidates joining technical institutions have a reason to smile as the government announced a move to sponsor their learning.

The move will see the students who did not qualify for university placement enjoy free tuition of up to Ksh30,000 from the government.

Further, the students are also set to enjoy free education loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

According to a report from the ministry of education, the move which will cost the government about 20 billion, seeks to put an end to discrimination in transition to higher education.

Majority of the students set to benefit are those joining Technical Vocation Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Having scored grades as low as D and E, like their colleagues in Universities will have a chance to build their careers.

By impacting these learners with skills, the government estimates that the transition will help solve the unemployment menace in the country.

The current fee estimate in TVET institutions is Ksh56,000.

The report comes months after Deputy President William Ruto announced last year that no student joining technical training colleges in the country will be required to pay fees.

“There will be no money asked from students joining technical training colleges as fees. The money will now be paid by the government. They will also be entitled to a grant and loans just like their counterparts in universities,” announced the Deputy President during a tour at the coast in August 2018.
