Conte was desperate to sign Lukaku while he was at Chelsea two years ago, but the former Everton striker opted to seal a move to Man United.

He had an excellent first season at Old Trafford, netting 27 goals for the Manchester outfit.

He has however struggled in his second, scoring just 15 goals in as many appearances for the Red Devils.

Getafe make top four statement with Valencia win

Getafe took another step towards Champions League qualification on Saturday as Jorge Molina scored twice in a sensational 3-0 win over fellow top-four contenders Valencia.

The 37-year-old Molina capped a storming performance with two goals in the second half before Jaime Mata added a third with three minutes left, after Valencia’s Alessandro Florenzi had been sent off.

Getafe stay third but moved five points ahead of Valencia in fifth. Sevilla will again pull level on points with them by winning away at Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Up next for Jose Bordalas’ side is a trip to Barcelona next weekend but on this evidence, it will be the stumbling Catalans feeling nervous ahead of that game at Camp Nou.

Getafe face La Liga’s defending champions on the back of four consecutive victories, in which they have score nine goals and conceded none.

They bullied Valencia from start to finish, faster to the ball and hungrier in the tackles, with all three goals coming from Getafe’s players running harder or reacting quicker than their opponents.

After missing out on the top four to Valencia on the final day of last season, beating them might have carried some extra satisfaction and delivered another dose of belief that this term they can finish the job.

Bordalas took over Getafe in 2016 with the team 21st in Segunda but led them to promotion that same season before finishing eighth in their first year in the top flight, and then fifth last term.

After Barca, they will play Ajax in the Europa League.

Valencia, meanwhile, have won only four out of nine games since the turn of the year, with their own Champions League last 16 tie against Atalanta fast-approaching.

Getafe were the better side in the first half but had to wait until 13 minutes into the second for Molina’s opener. He slid the ball to Mata and then beat two Valencia defenders to the rebound from Jaume Domenech’s save.

Dani Parejo was at fault for the second as he gave the ball away in midfield and one pass set Molina free. He had three defenders to beat but somehow bundled through, a final pirouette making space for a smart finish.

Florenzi was sent off with 12 minutes left for a frustrated spear tackle from behind on Marc Cucurella before Mata made it three.

This time Angel spun the hapless Mouctar Diakhaby before laying the ball on his teammate. Mata dummied Domenech and had an open net.

Isiolo/Chuka, Panthers/Tumaini in Chapa Dimba final

Action at the Eastern Regional final of the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom tournament

MACHAKOS, Kenya, Feb 8 – Isiolo Starlets will face Chuka University while Black Panthers will take on Tumaini in the girls and boys final of the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Eastern Region finals on Sunday afternoon at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Isiolo progressed to the girls’ final after thrashing Mabuu Queens 8-0 in the first semi of the day while Chuka University had to dig deep before seeing off season one winners Ngakaa Talents 2-1 in the second semi of the day.

In the boys’ category, Tumaini were no match from Moyale’s Biashara FC as they hammered them 7-0 to set up a date against Black Panthers who progressed on post match penalties after a toughly contested 3-3 draw in regular time wit St. Daniel’s.

Isiolo were first on the Kenyatta Stadium pitch and it took them 24 minutes to get their party started when Nasibo Wario broke the deadlock.

Shortly after, the floodgates opened when Nasibo Ibrahim followed her namesake’s path in netting the second just three minutes later before Kula Dida stretched the lead to 3-0 10 minutes later.

Ibrahim then added her second of the morning three minutes to the break as the girls from Isiolo went to the breather tails up at 4-0.

They didn’t stop there and in the second half picked up the tempo on the same beat, Guyatu Halaike making it 5-0 in the 57th minute before Wario also joined the brace squad with a second in the 61st minute to make it 6-0.

The doubles of the day were not done yet as Halima Tadicha also notched her own brace within a space of four minutes, making it 7-0 in the 79th before crowning the day with another just seven minutes to the final whistle.

It wasn’t so smooth sailing for Chuka though in the second girls’ semi as they had to come from down to beat Ngakaa Talents and derail their dream of clinching their second Chapa Dimba title.

Action at the Eastern Regional final of the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom tournament

Samantha Adhiambo gave the former champions a dream start with a goal nine minutes from halftime and they looked well on course to sail to the finale.

But, they couldn’t withstand second half pressure from Chuka in the second half with Susan Wanjeri drawing her side level just four minutes after the restart.

The contest grew to enormous levels in the ensuing minutes and when it seemed that the game was headed for a tie, Wanjeri popped up once again five minutes to full time, notching the winner and sending her team to the final.

Meanwhile, Tumaini picked a leaf from Isiolo’s opening performance of the day to make light work of Biashara, who couldn’t just take care of their defending business as they shipped in seven goals.

Yasin Mohamed was the chief destroyer for Tumaini, scoring a tournament high four goals to aid his side pick the massive victory. He broke the deadlock in the 10th minute before Moses Kinama struck at the stroke of halftime to give his side a 2-0 buffer at the break.

Moris Kapirante then made in a third with eight minutes chalked off in the second half to make it 3-0. Biashara looked certain to challenge as they gave in a fight with Mustapha Abdirahman scoring on the hour mark.

But, that couldn’t go on for long as Mohamed completed his hatrick with a quick double in the 81st and 84th minute to sink Biashara’s minute hopes. Two minutes later, Kapirante scored his second and it seemed all going south for Biashara with Mohamed adding his fourth of the afternoon in the 89th minute.

The second semi was however a complete contrast of the first, as St. Daniel’s and Black Panther totally had a go at each other. A 3-3 draw in regulation time forced the game to penalties and Panthers ultimately stung the saints to win 7-6.

Jared Owili and Milton Lesuda gave St. Daniel’s a healthy 2-0 lead after 25 minutes, but complacency at the back cost them as they saw that lead wiped away within two minutes. Denis Murithi halved the deficit in the 37th minute and within a minute of him scoring, Preston Mwenda had drawn parity.

The Saints took the lead again in the 67th minute with Owili striking his second, but the hard working Panthers grabbed the equalizer with seven minutes left on the clock, Mwenda adding his second of the day.

Sofapaka claw Gor Mahia in Narok

Sofapaka coach John Baraza confidently said they would pick the three points against Gor Mahia a day before the clash, and they sure did as Batoto ba Mungu edged out K’Ogalo 3-1 in an entertaining Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match at Narok Stadium on Saturday.

Elli Asieche opened the scoring in the first minute of the match but Gor fought back to level the scores through Samuel Onyango. Second half strikes by new signings Promise Chinonso and Sebastine Ikhekai ensured Sofapaka pick the maximum points.

Gor Mahia remain at the top of the standings despite the loss with 44 points from 19 matches while Sofapaka are now eighth with 30 points having played a match more.

KÓgalo coach Steven Polack lauded the opponents for the win.

“They scored a quick goal as the match kicked off but the second one was as a result of poor defending from my defenders. The third goal we have to give credit to the striker, that was a brilliant goal. We had a number of chances, hit the post but it wasn’t our lucky day,” Polack said after the match.

“They scored the goals and we didn’t so congratulations to them but, no disrespect, I thought the long balls style of play ended in the 1980s. They also wasted time, falling over in the last minutes of the match. They had to do what they had to do to win,” he added.

Baraza was overjoyed after the impressive win.

“We had prepared very well and mastered how Gor Mahia have been playing. I knew they would be overconfident due to their good run but we stuck to our game plan and used their weaknesses to our advantage. We now know their ways and hopefully they will never beat us again,” Baraza said.

In an early kick off at Narok, Wazito registered their third win of the season by edging Western Stima 2-1. Musa Masika’s stoppage time goal helped the struggling side end their eight-match winless run. Augustine Out put Wazito ahead in the 51st minute after a goalless first half but Stima equalised in the 83rd minute through Kevin Omundi. Masika, younger brother of Kenyan International Ayub Timbe who recently made a move to English Championship side Reading FC, won the three points for Wazito with the last kick of the game with a low shot from inside the box.

In Muhoroni, Chemelil registered arguably the surprise result of the day by beating Posta Rangers 2-1 while Nzoia Sugar held Ulinzi Stars to a 1-1 draw at Sudi Stadium in the other matches played Saturday. AFC Leopards host Tusker in Nakuru Sunday afternoon.
