President William Ruto has established a National Steering Committee to mitigate the ongoing drought that has exposed over four million Kenyans to hunger.
The private sector led committee which comprises of 15 members will be headed by Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.
In a gazette notice, the head of state tasked the committee with various responsibilities including; mobilising resources to alleviate the impact of the drought, establishing a private sector-led National Drought Mitigation Appeal Fund in conjunction with the Kenya Red Cross.
The Committee will also approve the opening and closing of Bank Accounts to be jointly operated by a representative of the Private Sector, the Government of Kenya and the Kenya Red Cross.
Other members of the committee are, James Mwangi (CEO Equity Bank), Nasim Devji (CEO Diamond Trust Bank), Shamaz Savani (CEO African Banking Corporation Bank (ABC), Paul Rushdie Russo (CEO Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Rebecca Mbithi (CEO Family Bank Kenya Limited), and Jane Karuku (CEO East African Breweries Limited) among others.
Murimi Murage of the Deputy President’s Office will be the Secretary of the Steering Committee.
The Committee will be in place for one year and will report to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
