Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has defended his cabinet nominees saying the appointments were done on merit and diversity but not on ethnicity.

Speaking today Sakaja stated that he will fully defend his decision and that he will not allow the petitioners to perpetrate ethnicity in his cabinet and entire county government.

“There is no Community sidelined we have 10 positions for more than 43 communities and countless religions. All of these people elected the MCAs and myself and I represent all tribes in Nairobi. The Notion that for you to be served you must see somebody with you surname is a flop notion and that when you come to Cityhall you want to look for a CEC of your tribe, Chief Officer of your tribe to serve you that’s not Nairobi,” Sakaja said.

“They have gone to Court we are defending the case because it will set a very negative precedent that these positions are to be rewarded to tribes. There is no Kikuyu porthole in Nairobi , there is no luo hunger there is no Kamba lack of water our problems are the same and we are here to serve all Nairobians,” he added.

The Association of Muslim Lawyers and Nubians Right Forum sued Sakaja over appointments saying minority communities were left out.

The court then issued a court stopping the Assembly of Nairobi from vetting the nominees.

“That the respondents are all given two days to put in their response and upon service the petitioners are given two days to file submissions,” the order reads in part.

“Pending the hearing and determination of the application, the conservatory order is hereby issued staying setting aside or vacating the vetting and approval of the announced County Executive Committee Member nominees and nominees to the position of County Secretary and senior advisors of the county governor made by the 1st Respondent on 26th October,2022,” it states.
