Residents of Nairobi’s Thome Estate were left in shock after a 32-year-old woman killed her husband and two children before committing suicide.
Joyce Wanjiru allegedly killed her husband Joseph Gitau, 38, using an axe. She later strangled their two kids before hanging herself.
While confirming the incident, area Nyumba Kumi chairman Geoffrey Mwangi said the couple was embroiled in recurrent domestic disputes.
He said Gitau had on several occasions reported to him about being beaten by his wife.
Preliminary investigations showed the man was killed in his sleep, as he was found lying dead on the bed when police officers arrived.
Their bodies were discovered on Tuesday after Gitau’s friends failed to reach him through the phone.
“His phone was not going through and his wife’s phone was not being answered,” his friend Paul Ndung’u said.
Family members said Gitau had paid his wife’s dowry in a colorful event attended by friends and relatives two months ago.
Their bodies were taken to City Mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.
