– Southampton vs Tottenham game ended in 1-0 victory for the hosts at St Mary’s Stadium
– Jose Mourinho’ side opened the New Year on low note after failing to pull a comeback
– Danny Ings’ goal was the difference as Tottenham crashed into another a disgraceful defeat

The hosts put up an early lead through Danny Ings and that goal was all the difference needed as Southampton secured an emphatic victory.
Ings fired into the net of the visitors in the 17th minute of the first half after a beautiful assist from in-form Jack Stephens.
Totenham were slow on the attack and their efforts proved abortive as Southampton’s defence totally outsmarted Harry Kane-led attackline.
Mourinho made some tactical changes that saw Tanguy Ndombele subbed for Giovani Lo Celso in the 25th minute but that could not save the mess as the first half-ended with Spurs still the losing side.
Tottenham made some fantastic attempts and beautiful possessions in the second half but their hosts proved stubborn, forcing the trio of Moussa Sissoko Serge Aurier and Christian Eriksen booked for foul play.
Mourinho also suffered another blow as striker Harry Kane pulled out of the game in the 74th minute with what looked like hamstring injury, to be replaced by Eric Lamela.
There was a mild sub-plot off the pitch as Mourinho was shown a yellow card by referee Mike Dean after he was spotted seemingly trying to spy on Southampton coaching staff while the game was 1-0.
Mourinho appeared to say something to one of Southampton coaching staff – actions which are deemed illegal in the football world.
