Striker Meshack Karani came off the bench to score twice as Sony Sugar edged out woeful Posta Rangers 2-0 in a SportPesa Premier League clash at Ruaraka grounds on Sunday.
Karani, who came in for Maxwell Onyango at restart, broke the deadlock three minutes after stepping onto the pitch.
The former Chemelil Sugar and Sofapaka man doubled the scores on 72 minutes, finishing off an Enoch Agwanda cross.
Victory for Sony, only their third in 12 meetings against the mailmen, took their points tally to 42, five ahead of struggling Posta Rangers who’ve now lost four league games in a row.
The visitors were undoubtedly the better side from the word go, creating several scoring chances. Agwanda found Stephen Ouma on 19 minutes but the midfielder blasted wide from close range.
Three minutes before the break, Stephen Ouma forced Posta custodian Gradus Ochieng’ into a fingertip save with a well-calculated free kick from outside the area.
Ouma thought to have opened the scoring at the stroke of halftime but his rasping shot rattled the crossbar.
Sony coach Patrick Odhiambo pulled out Onyango for Karani at the start of the second half before Posta, who held Sony to a goalless draw in the first leg in April, introduced Joseph Mbugi for John Nairuka.
Two minutes later, Stephen Ouma played in right back Kelvin Wesonga who broke down the right flank before Karani headed his cross into the back of the net with Posta defence caught flat footed.
Jerry Santo and Peter Ng’ang’a paved way for Calvin Odongo and Luis Tera as Sammy Omollo’s men searched for the equaliser.
Tera had his attempt hit the crossbar from a free-kick at the edge of the box and on the other end, Agwanda missed a one-on-one before providing the assist for Karani’s second goal.
With three minutes of added time, Posta pumped balls upfront but Sony remained vigilant to bounce back from the 1-0 defeat suffered away to Kakamega Homeboyz last weekend.
Posta and Sony wrap up the 2018 campaign against Homeboyz and Wazito respectively.
