NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 22 – The friendly match between record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and Tanzanian side Azam FC that was set for Sunday has been cancelled, the club announced on Tuesday evening.
According to Azam, they have cancelled the friendly match, that was slated for the Nyayo National Stadium over security reasons, due to the current anti-government protests.
“Due to security reasons, Azam FC’s visit to Kenya for a friendly game against Gor Mahia FC has been cancelled. According to a letter from Gor Mahia signed by the Chief Executive of the club, Raymond Oruo, to the Chief Executive of Azam FC, Abdulkarim Nurdin MohmedAmin, the visit has been canceled until further notice,” a statement from Azam read.
The Tanzanian giants who are placed third in their Premier League standings had received an invitation from Gor for the friendly. However, with the protests which started last Monday rocking the capital city, the Tanzanians have decided to take no chance.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga announced that the protests will now be held twice weekly; on Mondays and Thursdays.
Gor had hoped to use the friendly to keep the players match fit during the international break and the cancellation will be a blow to coach Jonathan McKinstry.
K’Ogalo currently lead the FKF Premier League standings and are looking to firm up their lead after the international break, with a match against Vihiga Bullets next Wednesday.
