Tatu City
Developer Rendeavour has partnered with the Nigerian government for the
development of a new satellite city development in the Lekki Free Zone.
Rendeavour, which
claims to be Africa’s largest urban developer, is in the joint venture that
boosts foreign direct investment in Nigeria and will create tens of thousands of
jobs.
The project christened Alaro City sits on 150 hectares (370 acres) with parks and open spaces. As a mixed-income development, the city-scale development comes with industrial and logistics locations complemented by offices, homes, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels and entertainment.
Africa’s Fastest-growing Cities
Across the continent, Rendeavour’s urban developments span more than 30,000 acres (12,000 ha) in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Alaro City is
located in the North West Quadrant of the Lekki Free Zone and lies in the
growth path of Lagos, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities with a population
of over 20 million.
The City is
adjacent to the future international airport, the region’s largest deep-sea
port and major Nigerian and international companies.
At a ceremony
marking the start of the project, which already has multi-national companies
building facilities on site, Alaro City’s partners outlined their vision of the
satellite city.
“We welcome
the substantial foreign direct investment Rendeavour is making in Alaro City,
which will further enhance the Lekki Free Zone as the gateway of choice to
Nigeria and West Africa,” said Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
“Alaro City symbolises the government’s continuous support for private investors and fast-tracking development.”

Stephen
Jennings, founder and CEO of Rendeavour, said: “We are proud and delighted to
be bringing our successful inclusive city model to Nigeria and Lagos State, the
heart of the country’s vibrant economy. Our partnership with Lagos State will
ensure that Alaro City is an economically sustainable city open to all
Nigerians.”
Rendeavour invests over US$250 million in each of the projects, creating the infrastructure and living and working spaces that will help sustain and accelerate Africa’s economic growth, meet the aspirations of Africa’s burgeoning middle classes, and serve as a catalyst for further urban development.
Tatu City Smart Utilities
Infrastructure
Last year, Tatu Connect selected Honeywell and Landis+Gyr for smart metering technologies on the development. These will be used in different applications across industrial, commercial and domestic metering in Tatu City.
Honeywell
AS1700 Industrial metres have been deployed for businesses at Tatu Industrial
Pak. These robust technology metres offer outstanding measurement and complex
tariff capabilities with CT and CT/VT operated applications for the larger
power users at higher voltages and communicate through robust GPRS capability
to ecWIN™.
For the commercial and domestic smart metering at Tatu City, Landis+Gyr was selected due to its advanced smart metre technology and G3-PLC (Power Line Communication technology) capability, which is considered a quantum leap in AMI smart metre communications.
By using the
existing electricity network and PLC technology to communicate metering data
from both water and electricity smart metres, there is a reduced cost of
rolling out smart metering infrastructure at Tatu City.
