Admissions to technical, vocational education and training (TVET) institutes has more than doubled over the past eight months to hit 190,000 in the wake of growing demand for skills-based training.
Education Cabinet secretary Amina Mohamed on Friday said the enrolment had grown from about 80,000 as the government continued to tap more the more than 500,000 students who fail to join universities every year.
But the growth is likely to fall short of the government’s plan to enrol one million TVETs students annually.
Ms Mohamed was speaking in Nairobi during the launch of the 2019 Kenya Skills Show, a forum that showcased courses various institutions offer.
“The interest in TVET training is a show of the work the Ministry of Education has done in letting the public know of the opportunities the centres bring forth. Technical training creates job opportunities, supports entrepreneurship, economic growth and ultimately national development. This is an area that the government is committed to growing,” said Ms Mohamed.
In a plan laid out last year, the ministry is targeting 1.4 million enrolments in 280 technical and vocational colleges and 1.6 million enrolment technical vocational centres.
