Reigning women Premier League champions Telkom thumped USIU 2-1 on Saturday at the City Park to stay atop the standings.

USIU started strongly in the first quarter of the match but failed to capitalize on the numerous opportunities they created. They were punished a few seconds to the break of the first quarter through Eliana Chebet who struck in a beautiful shot to give Telkom a lead at the quarter-hour mark.

USIU got an equalizer in the 27th minute mark through Veronica Maua.

Tension was palpable by the third quarter as Telkom had their captain sent off as well as another teammate after rough tackles on the opposition. This brought about complains from head coach Rose Mbulo earning her a 10 minute send-off from the touch line.

USIU earned a flicker but failed to utilize as the shot was saved by Cynthia Onyango who deflected it away.

The final 15 minutes saw both teams play beautiful game with an aim of earning the three points. With the score still at 1-1, Lilian Aura scored the winning goal for Telkom in the 48th minute to wrap up the game.

Speaking after the match, USIU coach Wills Okeyo blamed his girls for lack of concentration and poor finishing.

“The game was balanced. We didn’t utilize our chances, the girls didn’t know how to make use of the short corners but we will work on them and see how we shall perform against Strathmore,” he said in reference to their upcoming match.

“We lost a flick but we will work on our fitness and we promise our fans better results in our next game,” added Okeyo.

Jubilant Telkom coach Rose Mbulo was, on her part, full of praise for her girls after the win.

“It feels very good(to get the win). The game was very okay though tensed, it was a tough game, USIU gave us hard time but they didn’t utilize their chances so we won,” said Mbulo.

The win leaves Telkom still top of the table with 11points after five games while USIU takes up the second place with seven points after four matches.

Elsewhere, in men Premier League, Jaguar beat Wazalendo 2-0 in a match played in Kakamega to grab top spot on the table with 13 points.
