After a season-long battle against relegation, Thika United were effectively relegated from the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) after losing 1-0 to Nzoia Sugar on Sunday at the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma.

Thika succumbed to a penalty successfully converted by Festus Okiring in the 35th minute. Nzoia had been awarded the spot kick after Michael Mutinda was judged to have handled the ball inside the box.

The result left them bottom on 23 points.

Wazito FC, who are the other strong candidates for relegation, bought themselves a little more time in the top flight as they drew 3-3 with Zoo Kericho at Camp Toyoyo.

Wazito, who are placed second last on the SPL table, were helped by goals from Simon Mburu, Anthony Njeru and John Mutua which guaranteed them one point and took their tally to 28 points from 31 matches.

Zoo’s diminutive ace Michael Madoya managed a brace in this match as Nicholas Kipkirui complemented his efforts with another goal.

Former champions Mathare United and Tusker measured up to a 2-2 draw in the other game played on Sunday.

Harambee Stars trialist Cliff Nyakeya scored a brace for Mathare as Timothy Otieno and Sidney Ochieng netted for the brewers to ensure each team walked back to the dug out with only one point.
