Three suspected thugs were at the weekend shot dead in a botched robbery in Nairobi.
The three were slain in Marurui area after a confrontation with police that left one officer injured.
An AK 47 rifle was found on the suspects, police said.
Officers from Flying Squad had trailed the men to the area on Thursday night before they were caught. The salon car they were using was badly damaged.
This increased to five, the number of suspects killed in the week.
Two others had been killed earlier on Tuesday in a confrontation with police along Waiyaki Way. The men were trying to rob motorists when one of the affected motorists, shot back and killed the two.
Their bodies were moved to the mortuary. Nairobi Police boss Philip Ndolo said they had enhanced patrols in the city to tame robbery incidents.
Elsewhere, police have launched a countrywide hunt for 17 hardcore criminal suspects who broke out of a Prisons vehicle while on transit to Industrial Area Remand Prison on Friday.
The suspects are said to have jumped out of the van by cutting metal grills on one of the windows of the vehicle. Two prisoners were arrested and detained moments after jumping out of the vehicle ferrying them from Thika.
The duo sustained bullet injuries after prison officers shot at them as they fled and are currently admitted at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Police have issued a countrywide alert on the men who escaped. They had been arrested in Thika, Juja, Ruiru and Murang’a over robbery with violence incidents, police said.
The two arrested men were picked at Marikiti market where they are said to have been hiding. They have been identified as James Kamau and Amos Wanyoike Wanjiru
The suspects on the run are: Sharif Hassan Juma, Davis Jonathan Kimani, Sebastian Mburu, Peter Gitau Macharia, Isaac Nganga Wainaina, Daniel Njuguna, Moses Njoroge, Andrew Kiiti Makau, Julius Wachira Wambui, Robert Maziwa Mose, Joshua Michael Okundi, Alexander Muriithi Irungu, Samuel Chege Themba, Johnson Kamau Ndegwa, Samuel Ngugi Maina, Ferdinard Omondi Opiyo and Josiah Mwangi Wairimu.
