Three suspected terrorists were Monday killed by the Administration Police’s Rapid Border Patrol Unit shortly after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated in Lamu.
The explosion injured two police officers on a road along the Kiunga-Somalia border, police said.
The IED, believed to have been planted by the terrorists was targeting security units on patrol in the area, police said.
Survivors said the militants hid in the bushes around the area where the explosive had been planted and ambushed the security officers once it detonated. The incident happened at about 9 am, locals said.
SEE ALSO :UN linked to terror paymentsDuring the ensuing fierce fire exchange, three of the militants were killed while two of the officers sustained gunshot wounds and were flown out of Lamu for treatment. Military choppers were later seen hovering the area. Officials said they suspect the attackers were many but managed to escape in the exchange of fire.
Police authorities said the officers were able to successfully repulse the militants.
The area is under the multi-agency security operation Linda Boni.

Last month, four Al Shabaab militants were killed when an IED they were setting up detonated prematurely at Kwa Omollo Bridge area in Lamu East.

The attackers usually hide in the vast Boni Forest and vanish towards Somalia. Security agencies operating in the area believe some locals collude with the attackers to commit the crimes.
Some of the terrorists have in the past raided mosques in the area and preached against the government.
