Canadian Singer and Rapper Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson popularly known as Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the 2020 shooting of fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
A Los Angeles jury on Friday found Lanez guilty of three charges related to the shooting that took place in the Hollywood Hills.
Initially,Lanez had pleaded not guilty to the assault involving an unregistered semi-automatic firearm, having the loaded firearm in a vehicle and discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, as revealed by prosecutors.
Lanez was found guilty in all the three counts.
Megan had accused Lanez of shooting her in the foot after she alighted from a vehicle they had been riding in following a heated exchange of words.
Megan alleged that Lanez wanted her to come clean with Kelsey Harris her former friend and assistant about them being intimately involved but she was reluctant as she knew Harris had a crush on the ‘Hate To Say’ Singer.
“I started walking away and i hear Tory yell, ‘Dance b***h “she testified amid sobs.”I froze .I just felt shock.i felt hurt.i looked down at my feet and i see All of this blood”
According to the prosecution, Women, especially black women are normally afraid to report crimes like assault and sexual violence because they’re often not believed.Lanez conviction is the second win for women following Harvey Weinstein’s charging that was highlighted with the ‘me too campaign’
During his nine day trial, Lanez did not take stand.
The jury, consisting of five men and seven women deliberated from Thursday and came to a verdict on Friday .
Lanez now stares at a possible 22 years jail term and a possible deportation to Canada.
