Kenya Amateur Stroke Play champion Samuel Njoroge, will still have to overcome two hurdles before he features in the 2019 Commercial Bank of Qatar Masters from March 7 to 10 at the Doha Golf Club course.
The Plus two handicap Njoroge who is also the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series champion, was the second Kenyan amateur to qualify for the Magical Kenya Open when he was the 72-hole stroke play championship.
He was later joined by South Africa based Daniel Nduva who clinched the Kenya Amateur Match Play title. Making a clarification on Wednesday on the Qatar tour, Njoroge said he had been invited first to play in the Qatar Open Amateur Championship set for next Thursday.
“They are picking the top three amateurs from the Qatar Open Amateur Championship to play in the Qatar Masters in March. Therefore it is the top three finish in the amateur event which am working for at the moment, and I believe I stands a good chance of making it to the Masters’’ said Njoroge after his practice round at Kenya Railway Golf Club on Wednesday.
He said besides himself, a number of other leading amateur players had been invited from countries like the USA and India, where the top 40 or so are expected to make the second round cut to finally go for the three slots. “ I am going to work for it because right now my game is solid even though it will be my first time play there’’ added Njoroge who is among the five Kenyan amateurs whose names were released by the Golf Union(KGU) to play in the Kenya Open.
The others are Daniel Nduva, Edwin Mudanyi, Mike Kisia and Dubai based junior Bradley Mogire. The sixth amateur will be named before the end of this month. A winner of the Mt Kenya Championship over the weekend, Njoroge will miss next weekend’s Muthaiga Open and the Windsor Classic on March 9 to 10 particularly if he qualifies for the Qatar Masters.
Meanwhile Kenya Open Golf Limited chairman Peter Kanyago congratulated the five amateurs who have qualified and their names announced by the Kenya Golf Union on Tuesday.
“On behalf of the Kenya Open Golf Limited Board, I congratulate them for their tremendous efforts throughout the year which have seen them earn a ticket to this year’s Kenya Open Golf Championship.
It is our conviction that, through the hard work by both our pros and elite amateurs at the ongoing Safari Tour Golf Series, we will have more Kenyans making the cut this year and challenging for the top prize’’ said Kanyago.
