NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 14 – The Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) has demanded a recall of administrative staff from supervision of academic functions at University of Nairobi (UoN) over ‘harassment’ by the audit unit.
Through a statement the union clarifies the respective lecturers had already submitted the letters to the respective head of departments through the dean’s office.
“Academic functions are discharged through departments headed by chairmen as per the University Act and guidelines set out by the University of Nairobi Senate,” the union insisted.
The UoN council had initially stated the move to supervise was apprehension of intimidation and harassment.
However Vice Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama stated the move was “to render comfort to all Staff of the University of Nairobi in the performance of their duties and obligations.”
The union has emphasised the supervision of Academic responsibilities by the internal auditor violates academic freedom and is tantamount to harassment of academic staff.
“We draw your attention to a previous letter by the Chair of Council, University of Nairobi in regards to continued harassment of academic staff by management through administrative staff,” they stated.
The union stated that administrative staff cease forthwith supervision of Academic functions which is a senate mandate.
