Mobile hailing App Uber, has launched its new Tuk Tuk business in Mombasa with an aim to cater for the coastal niche.

The apps UberPoa has been launched after a seemingly successful run in neighbouring Tanzania where Uber first launched UberPoa.

“Tuk Tuks are a popular choice across Kenya. When we launched uberX two years ago, we knew that this city would surpass our expectations, we have managed to create hundreds of economic opportunities and we are excited to create even more with the roll-out of uberPOA,” the companies General Manager for East Africa Loic Amado.

Amado also added that with the new service Uber customer will continue to receive the same seamless door to door Uber experience riders are used to with Uber.

‘’We believe users will be excited to have another reliable and affordable option tailored to move through the traffic on short trips around town, whether for business or pleasure.’’ He said.

Media reports by Kahawa Tungu also claim that Uber will use telematics technology in its app to monitor driving behaviour of driver-partners and encourage them to exercise caution as they drive with the Uber app and also require drivers to submit their National Identification, Driver’s license, NTSA vehicle inspection report and proof of PSV car insurance.

The move comes even as stiff competition continues in the taxi business with competitors offering wide range of products in an effort to have an edge over the other. UberPOA product will be priced with a base fare of Ksh10, Ksh15 per km, Ksh3 per minute and a minimum fare of Ksh50.

Uber and Taxify currently control the mobile hailing application space in Kenya despite others coming up in recent time.
