UN initiates plans to make quality garments from wood – KBC

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has started an initiative of manufacturing high quality garments from wood.

United Nations officials say the project is the culmination of many years of research by scientists who sought sustainable ways to produce quality textiles while conserving the environment.

The initiative by the UN Economic Commission for Europe is called Forests for Fashion, using discarded wood chips to make high-quality garments.

Project innovators say the textile is made of tree wood chips from certified forests or waste from the sawmill.

The fabrics vary in texture and quality, depending on the chemicals used. Already a section of designers have taken up the challenge, designing versatile pieces from the fabrics.

And in time, scientists hope that textiles made in this way will be widely accepted across the world.

The technology is currently only available in parts of Europe, making up one percent of the fabrics used across the world.

Creators of the project hope that one day, they will dress the world in wood.
