Kibra Constituency has been hit by an acute shortage of unga just days after the government reduced the price from Ksh. 200 to Ksh. 100.

Abi Ali a vendor of unga in Katwekera Kibra says that the reduction of the price of Unga has seen the demand overtake the supply.

“There is flour shortage here in Kibera. Our shop sells the commodity at a whole sale price whereby a bale of maize flour goes at Ksh. 1,140 which is Ksh.95 per packet. But a good number of our customers still miss it,” said Abdi.

According to Abdi they always order 350 bales of unga per day but they only last a few minutes.

Simon Ombongi resident says that the commodity still retails at Ksh. 200 in shops where it is readily available.

Ombongi says that some shops are also restricting them from buying  more than one packet of Unga.

“Since the time the government lowered the price of maize flour we still buy it at Ksh. 200 when you ask, the shopkeeper tells you that they are clearing the store. But there is a place I saw were they sell flour at Ksh. 100 but no one was allowed to pick more than one packet,’ said Ombongi.

The government reduced a 10 kg of maize flour to go at Ksh. 440, 5kg at Ksh. 250 and 2kg at Ksh. 100.
