Ann Mwangi, a third-year law student, is the new chairperson of the University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA).

Ms Mwangi garnered 24 votes to floor Samuel Ayoma who got eight votes and Ertiman Oile who managed four votes.

The polls were held on Friday, through an electoral college system and the results released on Sunday.

Ms Mwangi now becomes the first woman to hold that position at UoN.

ELECTORAL COLLEGE

She replaces Antony Manyara who has been at the helm of the powerful union for the last one year.

The elections were held using an electoral college drawn from the university’s 12 campuses, as opposed to the old system where students directly elected the chairperson.

Immediately after her election, Ms Mwangi received a congratulatory message from Vice-Chancellor Peter Mbithi.

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE

“Congratulations! Anne Mwangi becomes the first University of Nairobi [female]Student Leader, after nearly 50 years in existence. SONU has since been rebranded to UNSA,” Prof Mbithi tweeted.

Ms Mwangi and other student leaders elected during the election were later on Sunday evening hosted by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

“My compliments to my sister and friend Ann Mwangi Mvuria for being elected as the Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA),” Sonko said.
