The battle between Inua Mama lobby group supporting William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid and Team Embrace supporting the handshake between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga took a nasty turn after Laikipia county woman representative Cate Waruguru made derogatory remarks against Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru.
Waruguru who is one of the vocal members of team Tanga Tanga that supports Ruto, went overboard while attacking Waiguru, a supporter of the handshake, over her dalliance with the ODM leader.
Speaking during one of Inua Mama political rallies, Waruguru mocked the Kirinyaga county boss claiming she should focus on getting pregnant first following her recent wedding.
“Iko kamama kengine hapa kameolewa juzi. Hata tumbo ya kwanza hajatupatia mtoto lakini anafikiria ile kitu kubwa atazaa ati ni kutuzalia BBI”. (There is this lady who got married the other day. We are yet to see a child after her marriage yet she thinks the greatest thing she can give birth to is BBI),” Waruguru said.
Her remarks did not go down well with a section of Kenyans who reckoned that politicians, more so women, should not drag their opponents’ bedroom affairs into politics.
Waiguru, 50, has three sons from her first marriage with Tony Waiguru and people wonder if she is keen on having more kids with her new husband, Kamotho Waiganjo.
She tied the knot with Waiganjo on July 13 this year.
Uhuru Kenyatta was among the many dignitaries who attended the wedding of Waiguru and Waiganjo.
Waiguru and Waiganjo met 10 years ago in a ferry in Likoni, Mombasa county, while travelling to a conference on the constitution.
Their wedding took place at Kiamugumo Primary School in Gichugu constituency.
Those present included Raila, cabinet and principal secretaries and at least 30 MPs including woman representatives Florence Mutua (Busia) and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay).
Speaking in Uasin Gishu county, Waruguru told the governor that she did not represent the Jubilee party just because she had been elected in Kirinyaga county boss.
“Don’t dare think that just because Jubilee gave you the first term as a governor in the county, that you are now Wangu wa Makeri (a dreaded Kikuyu tribal woman chief during the British colonial period),” she stated.
She called on Waiguru to resign and let an ODM politician take her seat.
Waiguru is among Jubilee leaders who congratulated ODM candidate Imran Okoth after he defeated MacDonald Mariga in the Kibra parliamentary by-election held on November 7.
“Congratulations to Kibra MP-elect Bernard Otieno Okoth Imran and Kibra people for voting in a true son of Kibra. Thank you for honouring the handshake. Walikucheka lakini (They laughed at you but) things are different on the ground. Long live the handshake, forward onward to BBI,” the Kirinyaga governor posted on her social media.
But Waruguru said the Orange Democratic Party’s victory in the Kibra mini-poll does not mean the BBI will also succeed.
She spoke after the Orange party scooped the Kibra parliamentarian seat.
For Waiguru, on November 3, she went to Kibra to drum up support for Imran despite the Jubilee Party having its own candidate.
Waruguru is not new to controversy.
Three months back the Africa Independent Pentecostal Church Laikipia East Diocese demanded an apology from her for disrupting Sunday service.
Drama ensued at AIPCA church in Nanyuki when Waruguru and her supporters stormed the church as nominated MP Maina Kamanda was addressing worshipers.
Kamanda was asking worshippers to embrace the Building Bridges Initiative taskforce that was established by Uhuru and Raila.
Presiding Bishop Ndirangu Ngunjiri, who is the head of Laikipia East diocese ordered Waruguru out of the church saying she had not been invited.
The bishop said Waruguru’s supporters stormed the church, forcing Kamanda to leave through another door to avert possible clash similar to the one he had with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
The bishop ejected Waruguru and her supporters from the church with the help of police officers.
“We were shocked to see Laikipia woman representative storm the church with the intention of disrupting the service in the company of goons. They started shouting ‘mama yetu’,” Ngunjiri said.
Waruguru and Agriculture cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri are members of Tanga Tanga, a Jubilee group allied to the deputy president while Kamanda is in the Kieleweke team that supports Uhuru-Raila pact.
