VAT debate: Raila Junior holds talks with father, urges independent vote

Raila Odinga’s son has held talks with his father, NASA leader Raila Odinga urging him to allow MPs to vote independently on the proposed 8 per cent VAT on fuel products.

I have given Raila my views against the 8 per cent rise in VAT and expressed reasoning for MPs to vote independently. #Kenyansfirst,” Raila Junior tweeted on Thursday.

Raila Junior and two ODM legislators vowed to go against NASA’s call to support the Value Added Tax on petroleum products.

On Tuesday, the opposition declared that it will conditionally support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s recommendation slashing the 16 per cent by half. 

Raila Junior, through his Twitter handle, called on Kibra MP Kenneth Okoth to ignore the NASA statement and stand with Kenyans.

Kenya’s economy is expected to grow by six per cent this year, recovering from a drought, slowdown in lending and election-related worries that cut growth in 2017.

Documents sent by Uhuru to parliament ahead of today sitting underscored the debate in government over how to boost revenues without hurting the poor.
