There has been an evolving conversation as to whether DIY masks are an effective way of dealing with the ongoing pandemic.

The Ministry of Health has recommended that every Kenyan should wear a mask in public. This acts as a form of deterrent for people who are infected and are asymptomatic.

‘I protect you, you protect me’ is a mantra that is now ringing across the world. However, health authorities warn that masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Kenyan designers under the Kenya Fashion Council are busy around the clock making masks for the general population.

Some are also donating masks to anyone who is not capable of making a mask. However, if both these options are out of reach for you, the following guide is meant to provide a simple outline to make washable and reusable masks with clothing items that are readily available at home.

This is not a replacement of the surgical mask or the N95 filter but is extremely recommended especially for people living in densely populated areas.
