Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama believes the team gave their best during the Africa Cup of Nations despite crashing out in the first round of the tournament.

Kenya collected a single victory in their three Group C fixtures to finish third with three points.

The team lost 2-0 in their group opener against Algeria, before staging a dramatic 3-2 comeback to against Tanzania.

They however plummeted against Senegal in their final group match losing 3-0 to the Lions of Teranga, with Liverpool forward Sadio Mane striking twice.

Stars were hoping to progress to next round as of the four best third-placed teams, but Benin’s barren draw against Cameroon dashed those hopes.

Wanyama has now come out to concede the team made some grave mistakes during the tournament, but contends everyone who represented the country offered the best.

He further insisted the competition provided the team with sufficient experience, promising they will make a return to the next edition of the biennial showpiece.

“We have picked a lot of lessons as a team and it is difficult to exit now but we needed to learn first and we know in the future we can improve and make better steps,” Wanyama was quoted saying by Goal.

“To some in the squad, it was a learning experience, most of us it was our first time playing in the tournament and I think we gave our best. We can now dream of coming back again,” he added.

The team will now be seeking to make amends in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for later in July.

The Sebastien Migne-tutored side will take on Tanzania in a two-legged qualifier fixture.
