Sendy, which is fresh from raising a $2m round has announced it will now be using artificial intelligence to improve the platform’s efficiency and reduce the cost of logistics.
Sendy, competing Kobo360, Bwala, Lori Systems, Senga and a plethora of other services seek to use data that it currently collects to make predictions and improve efficiencies of pick up time and delivery time, and the entire delivery process.
“As a logistics and data-driven organization, investing in machine learning and artificial intelligence is a key way to ensure that we create efficiencies in the logistics sector. If we are able to accurately predict delivery time and pick-up time among other things using historical data that we have, we are able to reduce costs for the businesses we serve,” said Sendy Vice President of Data & Growth Mr. Marvin Kirschner.
Kirschner made the announcement during the Cape2Nairo hackathon that took place in both Nairobi and Cape Town simultaneously, early this week.
Cape2Nairo hackathon brought together coding experts and data scientists from different organizations to solve and predict when drivers arrive at particular destinations assigned to them.
Though AI alone won’t make any company successful unless there is a healthy combination of other factors at play, Kirschner assures that artificial intelligence is solving complex logistics problems at the Ngong Road-based firm by helping increase efficiencies and reduce logistics costs for its client’s businesses. AI also helps Sendy to allocate drivers in a smarter way, thus increase and improve reliability.
For Sendy, big data is key in forecasting, and optimizing future performance. The firm is working with data collected over many years to gather insights and help improve different areas of the delivery process and route optimization through machine learning.
“We have begun using Machine learning to solve not only one but many key issues affecting the delivery process using our existing data. We will double down on this to solve many problems at ago. When we know how demand will look like, we are able to quickly move vehicles to the areas with more demand, and consequently bring down operational costs.” Mr. Kirschner added.
Sendy hopes AI and machine learning will reduce the cost of logistics for businesses and significantly improve efficiencies as it makes it possible for companies to measure and track all the factors that can work towards offering accuracy and improving reliability in logistics based on the weather, real-time sales and other factors.
