Wolverhampton Wanderers needed three second-half goals to beat 10-man Manchester City 3-2 at the Molineux Stadium on Friday night.
The encounter came with so much drama as City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes could not last more than 12 minutes on the pitch before being handed a straight red.
The City keeper fouled Diogo Jota who had a one-on-one chance to put the home team ahead in the early stages of the meeting.
To balance up play, Pep Guardiola sacrificed Sergio Aguero, who recently returned from injury to give way for reserve goaltender Claudio Bravo.
And five minutes before half-hour mark, Raheem Sterling put the visitors ahead through a VAR assisted penalty in the 25th minute.
The England international failed to convert the kick as Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved the ball from crossing his goal-line.
However, the penalty was retaken after the technology spotted an encroachment from the home team, but this time, Sterling needed a rebound from the keeper’s effort before finding the back of the net.
Guardiola’s men took the one-goal advantage into the dressing room with the hope of managing the game with one man down.
Barely five minutes into the second half, City doubled their lead, and once again, it was Sterling who grabbed his brace on the night.
Meanwhile, an Adama Traore’s 56th-minute strike was all Wolves needed to reduce their deficit as the hosts quickly settled into the match.
Raul Jimenez tapped in from close range to level parity for the home team in the 62nd minute after Traore had badged Mendy off the ball he was trying to protect from the right-wing.
Just one minute to stoppage time, Matt Doherty fired his side to victory as they completed a double over the Citizens – having beaten them at the Etihad Stadium 2-0 this campaign.
Guardiola’s men are now sitting 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool who have one match to play.
Man City will be hoping to return to winning ways when they welcome Sheffield United in their next game on Sunday, December 29.
