Repair works are ongoing to restore sections of the Nairobi Expressway that was damaged during Wednesday’s anti-government demonstrations.
While giving an update Thursday, Moja Expressway Company said Mlolongo, Syokimau and SGR Toll Stations remain closed.
The company said it was working round the clock to restore services that were temporarily halted on Wednesday after protestors vandalized the road at Mlolongo.
Security will also be heightened on the busy 27 km road that connects Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi’s Westlands area.
“We ask for your patience as we restore the road to its original state and heighten security before the resumption of operations in the 3 affected Toll Stations. The reopening of the affected stations will be communicated in due course” said Moja Expressway in a statement.
Motorists plying the Westlands-Mlolongo route have been advised to exit from JKIA while those heading to Westlands join the Expressway from JKIA Toll Station.
The government which has strongly condemned the destruction of public infrastructure has vowed to bring those responsible to book.
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said he had forwarded a request to the DCI for investigations disclosing that most of the perpetrators were captured on CCTV and by media covering the demonstrations.
The CS said such acts of violence and lawlessness will no longer be tolerated, especially public property that has been built with taxpayers’ money.
“Going forward, organisers of demonstrations must guarantee that their supporters will not repeat such acts of lawlessness failure to which they will be held personally responsible for losses incurred through theft, vandalism, and the destruction of public infrastructure and property,” he said.
