Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has emphasised on the need for elected leaders to serve with unwavering dedication when carrying out their responsibilities.
The DP urged leaders to understand that they are under contractual agreement with Kenyans, subject to renewal or termination after five years.
“Let us stay focused and work for the people who elected us. We have a five-year contract with the people of Kenya subject for renewal on performance and termination on non-performance,” said Gachagua.
“President William Ruto and I have every intention to have our contract renewed. We have nowhere else to go because we do not know any other job. Make sure yours is not among the ones to terminated,” he added.
According to Gachagua, the perception formed by the electorate in the first two years after election is important, regardless of the achievements made by leaders in the following years.
“If the people who have elected you in the first two years decide they made a mistake you cannot reverse that matter. The first two years if they decide they made a mistake whatever you do in the next three years you cannot change that narrative,” he stated.
The DP spoke on Thursday during the launch of the Parliamentary Caucus on climate change.
Gachagua called upon all elected leaders to make a contribution in mitigating the effects of climate change by joining the government’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees.
“We have to deal with negative effects of climate change and we must think smart and change the way we do things. We must move away from rain fed agriculture to irrigation.”
“We must double our efforts in water harvesting and strengthen our resilient measures especially in Arid and Semi-Arid areas,” he said.
