Kenyan cloud-based HR and payroll startup WorkPay has been accepted into the latest cohort at American seed accelerator Y Combinator (YC) and with it secured $150,000 in seed funding. The founding team moved to Silicon Valley for a period that will end this month during which they have worked intensively with YC to get the company into the best possible shape and refine their pitch in readiness for Demo Day where they will showcase to investors and media.

Before joining YC, WorkPay closed on early-stage funds from Pangea Angels 1 and Kepple Funds and is currently processing monthly salaries for SME employees.

Y Combinator has seen over 2,000 companies launch including some familiar names like Paystack, Flutterwave, Stripe, Airbnb, and Dropbox. The combined valuation of the top YC companies was over $155 billion as of October 2019.

WorkPay along with two other Kenyan companies becomes the second company to join the prestigious YC Core program from Kenya since its inception in 2005. The first company to Join the YC core program in Kenya was Greenshoe Capital creators of mobile lending app Saida in the Summer of 2015.
