Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu was on Friday handed a Ksh.500,000 fine by the Senate’s County Public Accounts and Investment Committee (CPAIC).

This was after she failed to bring the necessary documentation and appear before the committee three consecutive times.

“This committee shall fine you Ksh.500,ooo for having appeared but not brought the documents that were required of you in our various correspondences on March 12, 2019 and June 11,2019 and in the newspaper adverts,” read Senator Kajwang.

The governor was before the Moses Kajwang-led committee over audit queries in the county amounting to Ksh. 20billion.

The committee further insisted that this was a personal fine and should not be paid by monies from the Kitui County government but rather from her pocket.

“This fine shall not be paid by the County government of Kitui, this is a personal charge to Governor Ngilu,”said Kajwang.

Governor Ngilu, who had instead asked the committee for a hearing at a later date, vowed to challenge the ruling.

According to Ngilu, the committee’s deliberations were planned to embarrass her.

CPAIC is seeking answers as to how Kitui County spent the money in two years.

In the 2017/2018 report of the Auditor General, Kitui County got a qualified opinion.
